Abstract

Students are the future successors of the nation and education is one of their weapons in order to face the challenges in the future. However, there are still some issues regarding students so that they cannot develop optimally. One of these issues is that there are still many students who have dropped out from their college. Previous research has found that drop outs occur for various reasons, some of those are lack of motivation, poor economic conditions, or lack of interest in the majors taken. Picking wrong majors is one of the issues that often arises in college life, even a previous study found that 40% of the causes of drop out are caused by picking wrong majors. This study aims to test whether students have choose college majors align to their interests. Participants of 300 students were involved in this study. Each participant was asked to write down the college major they were currently in and fill out the Self Directed Search (SDS) that tested a person's interest. Researcher then used the result of the SDS to match whether the college major picked is allign to their interests. Based on descriptive statistical operations, it was found that 35% of students pick college majors that did not match to their interests. Some of the reasons are: lack of information about how to pick college major correctly. The suggestions and implications of this study are explained further in the paper.
