Abstract

This study aims to investigate how far the implementation of BMT social function contributes to improve the welfare of communities living around the BMT in Surabaya. The focus of this research is people who are not directly involved in the activities of BMT. This research uses research methodology qualitative approach and case study, with research scope of four big BMT in Surabaya, among others BMT Muda (East Surabaya), BMT Amanah Ummah (South Surabaya), BMT UGT Sidogiri Cab Demak (North Surabaya), and BMT Sri Sejahtera (West Surabaya). The result of this study is indicated by interesting findings. That findings is that the implementation of social function of BMT as a financial institution is not merely limited to social aids targeting its members and employees, but the implementation of social function in BMT embodied in another form of community empowerment in order to improve the economy of the society as a whole. This study shows in depth how BMT Sri Sejahtera and BMT Muda strive to implement social functions through empowering local communities who are either directly involved or not directly involved in BMT activities.
