Abstract
Cassava is an important crops as staple food source in most parts of Indonesia, especially in marginal areas. Indonesia is an important producer of cassava in the world which ranks second after Nigeria. Indonesia cassava production in 2014 amounted to 23,918,118 tons with average productivity of 20.2 t ha . Cassava contains a lot of carbohydrates, calcium, and phosphorus, but the content of protein, minerals and vitamins are low. For most Indonesian people, cassava is still seen as low class commodities because of consumed by people in marginal areas. However, it turns out cassava has enormous potential for health. The benefit of cassava for the health, among others are: increased immune function, protection against heart disease, slowing aging, etc. Cassava has high genetic diversity because cassava is cross-pollinated plants. Efforts to improve the nutritional content tubers of cassava have been done for example by increasing the content of protein and vitamins in the tuber. Cassava varieties that have been released by the Ministry of Agriculture is currently a total of 11 varieties, but there is no specificity of functions to use for health. In the future is expected to be developed cassava varieties of high nutritional value by utilizing the genetic diversity of cassava in Indonesia.
