Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries that has the potential to become a leading tropical fruit producer, which is supported by the availability of germplasm, land and human resources. Basically, the cultivating practice of tropical fruit according to the concept of sustainable agriculture has partly been realized in the community which were sourced from local wisdom and technology engineered by research. The salient aspects of sustainable tropical fruit farming are the use of local genetic resources, environmental friendly and site-specific cultivation, as well as bioecology-based pest and disease control. Various obstacles are still being faced to ground during the application of technology to support sustainable tropical fruit farming, including a narrow and scattered garden scale, limited information on crop phenology, specific environment and technology, also finite technology adoption. The challenges ahead are how to create a corporate tropical fruit farm, increase research in the field of tropical fruit with focus on providing data and information related to crop phenology and site-specific technology, including encouraging the adoption of innovative technologies with more effective dissemination.
