Abstract

This research involved nine senior high school who had high achievement in the study of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), consisting of five from SMA Negeri 1 and four from SMK Negeri 3 of Purwokerto, Central Java. The primary aim of this research was to identify the learning strategis used commonly by the better performing learners of EFL. By using retrospective interviews the participating students were asked to report “special things they did” in acquiring English. The interviews were taperecorded, and abbreviated transcript were made of the tapes in order that the data were easier to analyze. Data on learning strategy were identified and classified by using O’Malley’s psychology-oriented taxonomy. In addition to informant feedback, data validation was also done through peer discussions. This case study discovered some twenty-one or so strategies. Of the strategies listed, ten were used commonly by the two groups of students, including the commonest used strategies of practice, seeking learning environment, and resourcing. A major instructional implication resulted from this study is that the ten common strategies of the better performing students, including the three most commonly used ones, should be given a priority in strategy training or strategies based instruction by classroom instructors of English. This may benefit those students who are not yet encountering significant success in their learning of the “new” language.
