Abstract

Currently, Indonesia is no longer have much choice in order to achieve national food security, in addition to utilizing suboptimal lands that are still available and allow it to be managed as a commercial food production. Indonesia's Peatlands provided extensively reach 20.10 million hectares, has the potential to be used as agricultural land through the application of technological innovations to spur the local knowledge assimilated to correspond to the typology of land. Utilization of organic matter through natural biodegradation using the initial microbe is expected to improve the quality of the peat soil fertil ity. Optimization of the physical, chemical, and soil (micro) biological properties, that is accompanied with the management of water resources in order to more effectively and efficiently; as well as the selection of appropriate commodities and the development of adaptive varieties will specifically support the acceleration of productivity improvement peatlands. The technical and technological of agriculture efforts conducted must be also consider the possible impact of ecological, sociocultural appropriateness with the local communities, in addition to economically benefit for farmers as the main actor.
