Abstract
The objective of this research was to analyse the problem-solving skills of the eleventh-grade students of public senior high schools in Surakarta on excretory system learning topic by considering their cognitive development level of formal operational stage. The schools were selected using purposive random sampling. This research employed quantitative method by analysing the students’ test scores. The research sample comprised 120 public senior high school students in Surakarta. Data collection method was applied by giving an instrument in a form multiple choice questions problem solving ability measurement based on Mourtus, Okamoto & Rhee theory. The result showed that the category of defining the problem obtained 72.44% of the good category, exploring the problem 64.70% of the good category, and planning a solution 77.52% of the good category. The categories of implementing the plan and examining the solution were of the low categories by 24.10% and 33.54% respectively. The evaluation aspect was of the medium category by 49.44%. Based on the analysis result, it can be seen that the problem-solving skills of the senior high school students in Surakarta in the excretory system topic are not optimal and need to be improved as the demand of the 21 century. st
