Abstract

The background of this study is the low mathematical literacy skills junior high school students at each evaluation of PISA. The aimed of the study is identify student difficulties in solving mathematical literacy questions. Types of study is qualitative descriptive. The study participant consisted on eightht grade students senior high school allegedly having difficulty in solving the problem of mathematical literacy. The validity of the data is done by comparing the results of tests and interviews. Interviews were conducted with students and one of the mathematics teachers at the school. The validity of the data is done by comparing the results of tests and interviews. Data analysis revealed that the first difficulty experienced by students was understanding the language or sentence contained in the problem of mathematical literacy. This is justified by students at the interview. Students explained that they were not used to solving problems with complex contexts such as those in the matter of mathematical literacy. The next difficulty is mathematical modeling. This is presumably because students are not used to doing modeling in solving problems correctly. The use of correct completion procedures is also a difficult thing for students to do. This can be seen from each student's answers that are not ordered and do not match the problem solving procedure.
