Abstract

Reasoning ability is one of the mathematical competencies that needs to be developed. Algebra is fundamental and important material, thus, its development needs to be emphasized in mathematics. This study aims to determine the profile of students' algebraic reasoning abilities in solving algebraic problems, formulated based on indicators of reasoning ability through observing patterns or regularities, formulating conclusions and guesses related to observed rules, assessing / testing prejudice, building and evaluating mathematical arguments, and describing / validating logical conclusions related to several ideas and their interrelationships. The research instrument applied tests of algebraic reasoning abilities and reasoning ability assessment rubrics. The design of this study is based on a descriptive-qualitative research model with the object of research of high school students. The research subjects were divided into 3 male and 3 female students from a total of 28 students in grade XI, distinguished by their level of achievement ranging from the high, medium, and low. These subjects were then tested based on their algebraic reasoning abilities, in addition to interviews conducted to reinforce the conclusions of the research data. Based on the analysis of the overall data, female students have better algebraic reasoning abilities than the male.
