Abstract

Problem solving ability is part of the very important mathematics learning objectives. Problem solving ability in mathematics can be seen from several dimensions, one of which is cognitive style. Cognitive style is divided into two parts, namely the Field Independent and Field Dependent. This study aims to analyze and describe the ability to solve mathematical problems based on steps Polya for junior high school students in terms of cognitive style, Field Independent and Field Dependent. This type of research descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this study were junior high school students of class VIIIB in the even semester of 2017/2018 Academic Year, selection of research subjects based on porposive sampling technique. Determination of the subjects of the cognitive style Field Independent and Field Dependent is based on the test results Group Embeded Figure Test (GEFT). Data collection techniques were carried out using tests methods and interview results. Based on analysis the results of research, it is known that the two students with Field Independent cognitive style mastered four stages of problem solving based on Polya steps well, whereas both students with Field Dedependent cognitive style only mastered one stage of solving problems based on step Polya. In other words, Field Independent cognitive style students superior to Field Dependent students.
