Abstract

This research was conducted with the objectives to (1) Develop a STEM-based textbook for the study of biological conservation in introductory biology courses (2) Improve students' HOTS (higher-order thinking skills) abilities in biological conservation studies in introductory biology courses. The teaching materials developed in this study have a format in the form of a book containing material exposure and a series of learning activities relevant to the lecture material. The book's entire contents are designed to be STEM-based and are expected to improve students' HOTS (higher-order thinking skills) abilities. This research uses the Educational Research and Development method or called R&D by Thiagarajan. The design of this research follows the stages of R&D that Thiagarajan has proposed. These stages are outlined in a 4D model, which includes: (1) Definition; (2) Design; (3) (Develop); and (4) Disseminate. The stages of 4D Thiagarajan are interconnected and continuous units between one step and another. This STEM-based teaching material is expected to be a means for students to develop themselves during lectures to hone their HOTS skills by the desired lecture goals. If students go through appropriate learning activities, it can help them achieve lecture achievements, including critical thinking skills and standardized learning outcomes.
