Abstract

The growing numbers of Korean dramas catapult expectations on Indonesian men. Such portrayals of the male lead birthed the perfect definition of male partners among Indonesian people. This notion is recognized as the concept of masculinity which becomes standard as later leads to toxic masculinity. This study investigates how the definition of a perfect man in Korean dramas contributes to toxic masculinity among Indonesian men by Indonesian people. This analysis aims to explore why Indonesian people tend to project high standards towards Indonesian men in a romantic relationship and to inspect the extent of its effects in the structural behavior formation within Indonesian men. The participants are Indonesian women within the age range of 18-24 who have been watching Korean dramas in the last year and Indonesian men in the same peer group. This research is conducted from a qualitative study, gathering answers from a questionnaire from 96 respondents. This study involves the four dimensions of gender stereotypes: traits, role behaviors, physical characteristics, and occupations. This research indicates that the romanticization of toxic masculinity in the portrayal of lead male characters in Korean dramas has contributed to unrealistic expectations of men among Indonesian women.
